The Injury Prevention Program at Miller Children’s & Women's Hospital Long Beach cares about keeping kids safe. That’s why we focus on providing safety education to children and families in our community. Important laws and statistics on childhood injuries help guide the education and resources our Injury Prevention Program provides to our community.

We offer:

  • Bicycle safety classes
  • Certified bicycle and skateboard helmets
  • Infant CPR classes
  • Car seat classes
  • Specialty car seats through our hospital loaner program
  • Educational materials and resources promoting bicycle, pedestrian and car seat safety
  • Community outreach at events throughout the Los Angeles and Orange Counties

Important facts to help keep children safe:

We care about the children in our community and preventing injury before hospitalization. Important laws and statistics on childhood injuries help guide the education and resources our Injury Prevention Program provides to our community.

  • California law requires that anyone under 18-years-old wear an approved helmet when riding a bicycle, scooter, skateboard or inline skates. This includes children who are sitting in restraining seats or are being towed behind the bike.
  • Infants must remain rear-facing until the age of 2 unless they are 40 pounds or more or 40 inches in height or more.
  • Children must remain in a booster seat until they are 8-years-old OR are taller than 4 feet 9 inches. However, best practice is to keep children in a booster seat until they can pass the 5-step test. The recommended 5 step test can be found under our resource section.
  • Only wear helmets that are certified and meet the standards of either the American National Standards Institute, the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Snell Memorial Foundation's Standard for Protective Headgear for Use in Bicycling or the American Society for Testing Materials.

Visit our resources for more information regarding proper use and safe installation of car seats.
